The shift from seeking political favors to directly influencing or even controlling political systems represents a significant change in how democracy functions. The people, caught in the web of these artificial constructs, no longer see reality as it is. Are we not witnessing the rise of a technocratic Leviathan that will swallow human agency?
Nāgārjuna:
Ah, my dear disciple, you speak as if this Leviathan exists inherently. Tell me, does it exist from its own side or only in dependence upon causes and conditions?
Disciple:
Surely, Master, AI and technocracy exist! We can see their power—governments obey them, economies depend on them, and even human cognition is molded by their algorithms. How can they be empty?
Nāgārjuna:
Let us examine this. Does AI arise from itself, from another, from both, or from neither?
If AI arises from itself, why does it require human engineers, data, and economic structures to function?
If it arises from another, does it not then depend on external causes, making it devoid of independent existence?
If it arises from both, would that not be contradictory—dependent and independent at the same time?
If it arises from neither, how can it exist at all?
Thus, AI and technocracy, like all things, are empty of intrinsic existence.
Disciple:
But Master, even if AI depends on human systems, does it not still have power? It manipulates human cognition, determines public discourse, and directs global economies. Are we not trapped within it, much like the ignorant beings caught in the cycle of suffering?
Nāgārjuna:
You grasp at AI as though it were an absolute force. But tell me, does AI control humans, or do humans control AI?
If AI truly controlled humans, why do some societies resist its dominance while others embrace it?
If humans controlled AI, why do they fear its consequences?
Neither AI nor humans have inherent authority. AI appears powerful because of dependent co-arising—it is shaped by economic policies, corporate greed, and human attachment to convenience. It has no absolute control, just as a mirage appears to have water but lacks substance.
Disciple:
Yet, Master, does AI not erode human cognitive capability? People no longer think deeply; they surrender to algorithms. Even governments submit to AI-driven policy decisions. Does this not signal an existential threat?
Nāgārjuna:
Ah, my disciple, your concern is valid, but observe carefully:
Before AI, were there not other forces shaping human thought?
Did kings not manipulate public belief in the past?
Did religious and political institutions not claim monopolies over knowledge?
This "new" problem is but an old illusion with a new mask. What AI takes away, critical reasoning can reclaim. But if you see AI as an inescapable force, you fall into nihilism—abandoning agency. If you deny AI’s influence completely, you fall into eternalism, believing in a static, unaffected human mind. The Middle Way is to engage with awareness, neither rejecting nor surrendering to technology.
Disciple:
Then what is the correct response, Master? Should we dismantle AI? Should we create laws to restrain it?
Nāgārjuna:
Regulation alone cannot change human attachment to ease, efficiency, and authority. Instead, cultivate prajñā (wisdom) and upāya (skillful means):
Develop Digital Awareness: Teach people to see AI as a tool, not a master.
Break the Illusion of Objectivity: Show that algorithms, like all constructs, are shaped by human biases.
Restore Cognitive Agency: Encourage debate, reasoning, and independent thought.
Reclaim the Public Sphere: Ensure AI serves public discourse, not corporate greed.
Technocracy arises not from AI itself, but from the collective acceptance of its authority. See its emptiness, and it loses its power.
Disciple:
Master, your wisdom is like a sharp sword that cuts through illusion! AI has no fixed existence, nor does its control over humans. If we engage with awareness, resist its blind authority, and reclaim our cognitive capabilities, then AI becomes a servant, not a ruler.
Nāgārjuna (smiling):
Indeed, my disciple. Walk the Middle Way—not of fear, nor of submission, but of wisdom. No system is beyond change, for all arise and dissolve in interdependence.
